Periodontal disease can become very serious and can affect your health and your life. Periodontal disease doesn't typically cause discomfort to the patient; therefore, most people don’t pay much attention to it.
If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, the first thing we have to do is a thorough cleaning. The hygienist will scale all of the tartar off your teeth and underneath your gums.
You may also need to use prescription mouthwash after brushing to help fight the bacteria in your mouth. Some people also may need to take oral antibiotics to get rid of the disease.
Once the disease is under control, it is important to maintain the health of your teeth so tartar and plaque don’t build back up. Daily brushing, flossing, and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash are the best defenses against periodontal disease.
Routine visits to your dentist, along with professional cleanings, are necessary to keep your mouth healthy. We will monitor your mouth and gums for any sign of the disease to make sure that if it comes back, we catch it early so it is easier to treat.
